A genuinely striking piece of American studio craft, this hand-painted relief plaque depicts a trio of bearded irises in full bloom — two open flowers and a tight bud — sculpted in high relief from cast stone or composition material and painted in rich burgundy-plum with sage green foliage. The textured, deckle-edged stone ground gives the piece an organic, almost archaeological quality, as if the irises were pressed into ancient limestone.
The plaque is signed in the lower right corner in the artist's hand — reading Hageman — and is mounted in a decorative wrought iron scroll frame with scrollwork cresting and base, fitted with a sawtooth hanger on the reverse. The back bears a small oval maker's label.
A sophisticated wall piece for a garden room, sunroom, cottage interior, or botanical art collection.
