A spectacular and museum-quality large blue and white relief-molded ceramic pitcher/ewer, approximately 10 inches tall, in the grand tradition of Victorian and Baroque decorative ceramics. The body is organized into three distinct decorative bands of deeply molded relief:
Lower body band: A continuous wraparound frieze of classical nude figures — cherubs, putti, and mythological figures — frolicking, wrestling, and dancing among dense acanthus leaf scrollwork and foliate backgrounds. The figures are rendered in remarkable anatomical detail with expressive faces and dynamic poses.
Shoulder band: A repeating row of bold fan/shell/anthemion motifs in deep relief, creating a strong architectural transition between the globular body and the neck.
Neck band: Dense acanthus leaf and floral scrollwork with additional applied figural faces and foliate detail rising to the wide helmet-shaped spout.
The tall serpentine handle is decorated with floral and foliate relief work and terminates in a floral rosette finial at the top. The interior of the wide helmet-shaped pouring spout is glazed in smooth cream/ivory. The overall glaze is a blue-washed white — the cobalt blue pooling beautifully and dramatically into the recesses of the relief work, creating wonderful depth and contrast throughout.
