A genuine piece of American hotel china history, this small ironstone ashtray was custom-manufactured by the Hall China Company of East Liverpool, Ohio for the Regency Hotel in New York City — furnished through K. Friedman & Sons, NYC, one of the premier hotel supply houses of the mid-20th century. The backstamp reads in full: "Made by Hall China Co. for Regency Hotel, Furnished by K. Friedman & Sons, N.Y.C."
The interior center bears the Regency Hotel's elegant house crest: a script "R" in an oval cartouche, flanked by paired griffin wings and scrollwork, surmounted by a crown — all rendered in rich sepia-brown on bright white vitrified ironstone. The shallow form with rolled rim and recessed foot ring is quintessential mid-century hotel service ware, equally suited to holding cigarettes or small dishes.
A wonderful piece for collectors of American hotel china, Hall China, New York City hospitality history, mid-century restaurant ware, or vintage smoking accessories.
