A handsome example of relief-molded stoneware, this blue and white pitcher showcases the dense, high-relief decoration that defined English and American pottery. The body is covered in a lush cascade of ivy leaves and open roses tumbling across a fine basketweave ground — a motif popularized by Ridgway, Alcock, and their contemporaries during the height of the Staffordshire relief-ware tradition.
The twisted rope handle, scalloped spout rim, and octagonal stepped foot are all hallmarks of the period's most accomplished molded pitchers. The soft blue wash glaze pools beautifully in the recesses of the relief, giving the piece its characteristic two-tone depth. The unglazed interior base shows the raw stoneware body typical of the form.
Note: there is a small chip to the top of the handle — priced accordingly and clearly visible in photos.
A distinguished addition to a blue and white collection, a country house sideboard, or a display of antique American or English stoneware.
